Location Visits of our PhD candidates
Lab tours, networking and exploring German cities
But what is a Location Visit? Location Visits are for study phase students, organized by the student representatives. The students get the chance to get to know the different labs in our partner institutes and universities and get scientific insights into the research groups of our Fellows. During the last two years our PhD candidates in the Study Phase visited Jena, Karlsruhe, Erlangen and Munich.
The Science City Jena
A lot of companies and research institutions related to optics are based in Jena. Did you know that Jena is also called the city of light? 14 of our PhD candidates had the opportunity to visit the Abbe Center of Photonics and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering. The Location Visits are a wonderful opportunity to see what other PhD candidates are doing during their research phase and to pepper the other PhD candidates with questions. During the visit the PhD candidates explored the labs of Falk Eilenberger and Isabelle Staude and got some interesting input about their current research. As usual the networking and having a look around the beautiful city Jena was a part of this Location Visit.
Location Visit in Karlsruhe
The beautiful city of Karlsruhe was visited by 12 PhD candidates during the location visit there. The students from the research group of Martin Wegener warmly welcomed our group and started our visit at the lab with a talk about their research. They explained the 3D direct laser writing technique based on two-photon lithography. The highest resolution that can be achieved by DLW is typically few micron to sub-micron range. Fascinating! A highlight during all the lab tours and fellow talks was the downtime at the Baroque style castle and enjoying Karlsruhe to the fullest.
Welcome to Erlangen!
Socializing, exciting lab tours, fellow talks and exploring the area of Erlangen made the Location visit in Erlangen unique. Location Visits organized from the student representatives are a great opportunity to dive deeper into the world of physics. The topics of the lab tours in Erlangen were among other things laser physics and fieldoscopy. Our 17 PhD candidates, who joined the Location Visit in Erlangen, enjoyed their time while networking, socializing and exploring the city. Additionally to the lab tours, the students had the chance to explore the romantic palace gardens and the beautiful city centre.
The state capital of Bavaria: Munich
25 of our study phase students did not miss the chance and joined the Location Visit in Munich. The schedule of the visit was packed with a lot of exciting events three days long. The students visited the different research groups of our in Munich located Fellows and learned what they can do as a part of these research groups during their research phase. There was so much to see and learn! Besides that, our PhD candidates also had the opportunity to visit the German Museum, which is one of the largest science and technology museums in the world and socialize during lunch and dinner while eating typical German food.
Curious about the future Location Visits? The next Location Visits for our PhD candidates will take place in Paderborn (10th May) and Göttingen (11th - 12th May). Be a part of them and don't miss the chance to expand your knowledge and enjoy the vibrant cities of Germany.
