MPSP Autumn School 2024
Building the Future: Innovation and Collaboration at the Autumn School 2024
The vibrant city of Jena, renowned for its rich history and strong academic community, played host to the much-celebrated Autumn School 2024, and offered an ideal setting to welcome a new cohort of students and unite them with colleagues and researchers from our various institutions, all eager to dive into the exciting world of photonics
Day 1: Welcome Evening
The event began with a visit to the Beutenberg Campus and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF). The students had the unique opportunity to explore the campus and be guided through the cutting-edge laboratories where they witnessed firsthand the groundbreaking research being conducted. From laser technologies to optical systems, the work at Fraunhofer IOF exemplifies the vanguard of photonic research.
Following the visit, the guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The welcome evening provided the perfect opportunity for participants to network in a friendly and inclusive environment, allowing attendees to connect and engage with one another. As the evening came to a close, the excitement reached new heights with a fun quiz that challenged our students' knowledge of Jena and general trivia.
Days 2-3: Workshops that inspire
The Autumn School was packed with engaging workshops designed to equip the students with the tools they need to thrive in the photonics‘ world. From Communication and Presentation in the Academic Context to 3D Design & Impression or the lead in AI Tools, among others, our students learned to convey complex ideas in clear and compelling ways, to transform their creative visions into tangible objects, and leverage AI in their applications in research and development while keeping focus on the way.
Following the academic schedule, the students could enjoy free evenings filled with laughter and relaxation, with game nights and movies for those who preferred a more casual evening, and hiking along the beautiful paths and stunning landscapes of Jena for those with a taste for outdoor activities.
Day 4: A Unique Experience
The fourth day of the Autumn School was packed with a variety of stimulating activities designed to inspire.
The day started with the innovative "Build Your Own Institute" activity. Students were split into teams and challenged to develop a basic plan for their own research institute. This hands-on approach offered a great opportunity for students to discover the complex aspects of managing scientific research.
After the extiting morning session, the afternoon was reserved for the PhD Meeting and the Poster Session. During this time, students had the chance to present their research to fellow students and professors. Each poster was a visual representation of the hard work and dedication that students poured into their projects. The diversity of topics displayed the extensive research being conducted at the Max Planck School of Photonics.
Afterwards, the Networking Evening provided a relaxed setting where attendees could loosen up and share experiences from the day’s activities.
Day 5: Where Innovation meets Tradition
On the final day, students were treated to an exclusive tour of Zeiss facilities. a company with a rich history in optical systems and imaging technology. Founded in 1846, Zeiss has played a leading role in innovation, making significant contributions to the development of high-precision optics that have shaped the modern world.
This visit offered a rare glimpse into their latest projects explored advanced imaging systems and gained invaluable insights into how theory translates into practice in the world of optics.
If you missed this year's Autumn School, don't worry! We invite you to mark your calendars for Spring School next year.
